History

Philip Horace Matthews, 1902-1996, was born in England to the miner Richard Matthews, ca. 1850-1912, and his wife Grace Matthews, ca. 1864-1943. The family arrived in Canada in 1906 and took out a homestead near Bentley, Alberta. Phil farmed in the same area for much of his life. He married Marjorie Eveline Baker of Cayley, Alberta. They had four children: Richard, Gladys, (Doneton), Amy (Ward), and Dorothy (Heileman).
