Biographical history
Michael Rypien, 1919-2000, was the third of five children born to John Rypien and his wife Julia (Materla). The children were all born in Coleman, Alberta. In 1928 the family moved to the Sawdy area north of Athabasca. Annie Kawulok was one of five children born to Paul Kawulok and his wife Sofia (Konderla), who lived in the Big Coulee District north of Athabasca. In 1944 Michael and Annie married. They had four children: Diane, John, Lois and Don. In 1946 Michael and his brothers Bruno and Wallie purchased a small sawmill and, using their own farm tractor, they began their sawmill business which lasted through 20 consecutive winters.

The fonds consists of photographs of: Bernard Allen, a view of Athabasca looking east (1930s), Bill Bowzaylo (1937-38), Carl Carlson, Oscar Carlson, cutting ice (1926), dog team, fox farming, Archie Goodwin family at Tomato Creek (1920s), Lee Goodwin, Herb Haub, Charlie Mole, Phil Morley truck, Dexter, Eliza, Eva, Harry, Mabel, Mary, and Walter Overholt; Overholt house, railway ties, Rypien Bros. sawmill operations, Bruno and Mike Rypien, Sam Saley [1937-38], Frank Senz Jr., Tomato Creek, wanigan on Athabasca River, Al Wiles with his children Margaret and Richard. There is also an article from the Canadian Geographical Journal, Oct. 1971, by A.M.Beale entitled "Travels in northern Alberta sixty years ago."

Biographical information came from the book "Reflections from across the River.";The artifact is an oil painting by E. Tharp from the estate of Annie's brother, Alex Kavulok. The Kawulok family changed the spelling of their name to Kavulok.
