Biographical history

Mike Helm worked as a professional photographer in Whitehorse for many years before moving to Wynnedel, BC. He was commissioned by the Yukon Territorial Government (YTG) to photograph the construction of the territorial administration building.

Custodial history

Scope and content

The fonds consists of 213 photographs recording the construction of the Yukon Territorial Government complex on Second Avenue in Whitehorse from 1974-1976. The photographs are a detailed record of the interior and exterior structural form of the building as it takes shape - from the empty lot to the opening day celebrations. There is also a folder containing an opening day program with floor plans of the building and a descriptive list of the photographs. Another b&w photo and one colour photo, also taken by Michael Helm, depict the burning of the sternwheelers Casca and Whitehorse on June 20, 1974.
