Administrative history

The Millet United Church was built in 1903 by willing workers and believers who wished to have a church in the community. The church served as a Community Centre where Church, Social Evenings, Choirs, and Young Peoples meetings were held. They later built a manse next to the church. It was known as the Methodist Church until the United Church of Canada was formed in 1925. The church building was remodeled several times, most notably in 1948 when the steeple was removed and the central entrance was added, and again in 1975-6 when the basement was renovated to include classrooms, a new bathroom and added an organ and baptismal font. In 1975 the church became a part of the Wetaskiwin Larger Parish and their ministers began to serve multiple churches in the Pigeon-Lake, Millet Pastoral Charge. The church building was put up for sale in 2012 and the members joined the United Church of Wetaskiwin.

Custodial history

The Millet United Church fonds was given to the Archives of the Alberta and Northwest Conference – United Church of Canada in 2015. The United Church Archives appraised the collection and retained select documentation that pertained to their collection mandate, and returned the remainder of the collection to the Millet United Church. The Millet United Church then gave the remainder of the documentation to the Millet and District Historical Society.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of the business administrative records of the United Church of Millet including annual reports, minutes, financial records, bulletins, statistical reports, and directories. This fonds also includes copies of records that were used as a part of displays for major anniversary events including minutes, contracts, baptismal registries, and photographs from the first few decades of the church. There are several photograph albums documenting the history of the church and its events. This fonds also includes the administrative records of the Millet United Church Women Committee, including minutes, financial records and fundraising planning documents.
