Administrative history
The Milo Brownies were created by Penny Heather in 1986. She was Brown Owl (the leader) until 1988 with the help of Tawny Owls Betty Nelson and Stella Dixon during 1986/87, and Monica Monner and Joanne Monner in 1987/88. After that, Monica Monner was Brown Owl until the close of the Milo Brownies Unit in 2002. She was aided by Betty Nelson from 1989-1992, and Joanne Wilson from the end of the 1993/94 year to 1999. During 1990/91, Shirley Vair and Charlotte Nelson also helped occasionally, as well as many parents of the troops and members of the community throughout the years. While the unit was active, there were 60 participants, many of whom returned for multiple years. The girls participated in many different activities, such as holiday parties, playing games, singing songs, bake sales, attending the Ice Capades, hosting and attending banquets, ice skating, collecting Campbell’s soup labels, carrying the colours at Remembrance Day ceremonies, Thinking Day celebrations, selling cookies, and field trips to local farms, the Royal Tyrell Museum and the GuZoo. There were many functions that involved the troops from Arrowwood, Carmangay, Champion and Vulcan. These include an annual camping trip, the Brownie Revel (which Milo hosted December 14, 1992), and the special “Rossasaurus Rally” that took place in May, 1994. The Milo Brownies offered unique learning experiences and bonding opportunities to all of the local girls who participated during the unit’s 16 year run.
