Administrative history
The first meeting of the Milo Gymnastics Club was held on October 1st, 1986, with the intention of forming a recreational gymnastics club for children aged 4-12. The organizing group of 9 people elected Laureen Auestad as elected President and Barb Godkin as Secretary-Treasurer. Rocky Wilson was listed as Head Coach, and in November 6 people attended a Gymnastics Coaching Clinic. The first session began in January 1987 with 37 children registered at a cost of $5 each, and Sandra Horton as Head Coach. The program was held in the Milo School, and there was a reciprocal arrangement with Vulcan County that allowed the club to use the school’s equipment and the school to use the club’s, to the benefit of all of Milo’s children. At the end of the first year, the club removed the upper age limit for participation.
Over the years the Milo Gymnastics Club received support through government grants and from the Milo Recreation Board, Lions Club, the Milo and District Agricultural Society, and from various Ag Society committees, such as the Milo Sno-Goers. The club also raised money through a wide range of activities, including casinos, raffles, bottle drives and movie nights, in addition to running the concession stand for various town activities.
The Milo Gymnastics Club became inactive after 2002 and was formally disbanded in 2012. The remaining balance of just over $5300 was donated to the Milo Skating Rink, and much of the equipment was turned over to Milo Community School. No other gymnastics club was interested in the more specialized equipment (balance beam, etc), which was then put up for offer on an online service.
