Biographical history

Milward Belmont Davis Marcell (1869-1939) was born Milward Belmont Davis in Washington, Indiana, USA. In the early 1900s, he began following the rodeo circuit as a photographer in the USA and Canada. Marcell photographed the first Calgary Stampede in Calgary, Alberta in 1912 and the Winnipeg Stampede in 1913. He lived in Portland, Oregon; Calgary, 1912-1914; and Vancouver, Washington. He married Eva May Forbes in 1888, and they had one son Edward Forbes Davis, 1890-. In ca. 1909, he added Marcell to his surname. In 1911, he married his second wife, Anna Alethe Paxton Pierce. They had two children, Natella Davis-Marcell (1911- ?) and Victor Davis-Marcell (1916 - ?). He later married a third and A fourth time. He died in Pasadena, California.

Custodial history

In 2002, Keith Babb donated the material to the Provincial Archives of Alberta. It is unknown how Keith Babb obtained the photograph.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of one cirkuit print featuring the original (1874) Royal Northwest Mounted Police troop at the 1912 Calgary Stampede in Calgary, Alberta taken by Milward Belmont Davis Marcell
