Administrative history

Local Improvement District No. 459 was created by the Government of Alberta in 1913. It was authorized to raise funds through property taxation and provide rural municipal services such as road building. It was located west of the village of Millet and the city of Wetaskiwin. On March 1, 1918, Local Improvement Districts (L.I.D.s) became Municipal Districts (M.D.s), and L.I.D. No. 459 became the Municipal District of Big Stone No. 459. Its name was sometimes spelled Bigstone. In 1943 Municipal Districts were being amalgamated into larger units of local government, and the M.D. of Big Stone was ordered to merge with the M.D. of Montgomery No. 458 to become the M.D. of Wetaskiwin No. 458. In 1945 its number was changed to No. 74. In 1955 it was enlarged. In 1958 it amalgamated with Wetaskiwin School Division No. 36 to become the County of Wetaskiwin No. 10.
