Biographical history

Noel Cook, 1917-[after 1999] , was born in Vancouver and raised in Calgary, Alberta. He was the son of well-known Calgary musician Ethel Archbutt Cook. In 1937 he left Canada to study the cello at the Royal College of Music in London, England. He changed his name to Noel Taylor in about 1939, as a tribute to his mother, whose family name was Taylor. During the Second World War he served in the RAF and RCAF, then returned to Canada where he played cello for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra for two years. He moved permanently to England in 1947, and played for the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Covent Garden Opera and Boyd Neal Orchestra. He stopped playing for health reasons, and subsequently became a recording studio engineer.
