Biographical history

Norene Cooper (Miller) was born and raised on a farm at Holborn, just south of Stony Plain, Alberta. She is an accomplished seamstress, carpenter and talented artist. She has studied art with Ron Wigglesworth, Paul Braid, Doris McCarthy, Gesela Felsberg, Barb Books, Dirk Van Wyck, and Jerry Heine. Further training has come in the form of University of Alberta extension courses, summer campouts and weekend workshops. She has received the following awards: Lillian Nunn Scholarsip and Jean Stephensen Award from Alberta Community Art Clubs Association, several gold medals and ribbons from Alberta Seniors Games; her first gold medal awarded at Vermilion in 1988. Locally, Norene has entered the Yellowhead Rotary Arts Festival in the Visual Arts Division and been awarded certificates of First Class honors in quilting, photography and painting. Her art work has been shown in the Red Deer Museum, during Seniors Games several years in succession, in Jasper Park Lodge, Jasper Originals Gallery, locally in Hinton and at the Brush Fire Gallery in Jasper. This artist has worked with oils, acrylics, watercolour, pastels, pen and ink, etching and most recently watercolour on rice paper. Of most interest to her are pastels and drawing. Norene held her first solo show in Edson, Alberta in 1996. As a lifelong resident of Alberta, she has taken advantage of the variety of landscapes that Alberta has to offer including mountains, lakes, rural prairie scenes, and historic buildings. She married Orville Cooper in 1953. She and Orville had three children: Brent, Gerald and Kevin. Information for the biographical sketch is taken from information given by the donor.
