Biographical history
The Overseas Nursing Sisters Association of Canada was formed in 1920 to bring together nurses who had served with the Canadian Army Medical Corps in World War I, "to stimulate friendship among members" and "to give aid and comfort to nurses in need." In 1946 the Association changed its name to the Nursing Sisters Association of Canada. During the 1960s the aim of the group was extended and its members began to work for national unity and international peace.
Custodial history
The fonds was held by the Provincial Archives of Alberta (accessions 69.299, 70.157, 70.226, 80.77) until it was transferred to the Alberta Association of Registered Nurses Archives and Museum in 1991 at the request of the Edmonton Unit, represented by Frances Ferguson Sutherland. Beatrice Cole Hunter, a member of the Edmonton Unit, donated the National Directory, commemorative issue, in 1994.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of the Association's constitution and by-laws; National and Edmonton Unit executive minutes; financial reports; correspondence; directories and pamphlets; photographs and slides; tributes and medals; scrapbooks and news clippings; dolls dressed in military uniform (1914-1922); records and memorabilia of the Biennial Conference of the Nursing Sisters Association of Canada held in Edmonton (1994); Commemorative Issue National Directory of members, produced to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.
