Biographical history

O.L. Beater was described as a renaissance man. He was an English immigrant who ranched and farmed in B.C. and Alberta from around the turn of the 20th Century until WWI. Beater stayed with, and farmed a quarter of the Roberts’ family homestead near Millet. He recorded much of the life there of his neighbours, including F.A. Carlson, S.K. Fitzpatrick, Fred Schwartz, George Drummond and the Formbys. Beater enlisted in WWI and achieved the rank of Captain. He seems to have remained in England after the war.

Custodial history

The records were donated to the Millet and District Historical Society by Anthony Beater, nephew, in 1999 and 2000 as he was searching for more details of his uncle’s story.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of correspondence with the MDHS and laser copies of photographs from Beater’s album (1907-1911).
