Biographical history

Orville Kope, better known as "Orv", has been along time resident of Medicine Hat. Orv began a career in broadcasting in 1946, when he became an announcer for CHAT TV. In 1959, he became the Sales Manager for CHAT and General Manager in 1961. Mr. Kope retired in 1985, when he was Senior Vice-President of Monarch Communications which owns CHAT Radio and TV, as well as other broadcasting and cable outlets. In 1980, former Premier Peter Lougheed, asked him to Chair the Alberta Motion Pictures Development Corporation which provides funds to Alberta producers of motion pictures. In 1988, Mr. Kope was inducted into the Broadcaster's Hall of Fame. In March of 1993, Orv and his wife Terry, became millionaires when they were fortunate enough to win $1.1 million in the Lotto 6-49 draw. Mr. Kope is an active local volunteer and spokesperson for the annual Heart Fund and is highly regarded throughout the community.

The fonds consists of: Easter Seal Campaign packet (1958); magazine entitled "TV Scoop" (40 pgs) (1957); typed note and autographed by Boris Karloff regarding his donation of 2 neckties (97.8.1-.2) in support of the local Flood Committee efforts to raise money for flood relief. [Bob Busse of CHAT TV and Fred McGuiness of the Medicine Hat News solicited Hollywood stars for donations. Orv Kope purchased the two ties auctioned for $5.00.] (M2001.2.1) (1965); Maclean's Magazine printers proof sheets (5 pgs) of an article on Medicine Hat titled "Look What comes Out of the Hat!"; with accompanying note addressed to Mr. Buss (sp?). (M2001.2.2) (November 1, 1953).
