Biographical history

Percy de Wolfe was born in Nova Scotia February 15th 1877. He came to Dawson City, Yukon in 1898, married an Alaska woman named Jesse Philips and they had six children; Walter, William, Bertha, Ellen, Jesse and Percy Jr. Percy had a government contract to carry the mail from Dawson City to Eagle Alaska from 1915 to 1950. He was called the "Iron Man of the North" because of the hardships he endured on his trips, and the fact that he always made it through regardless of weather, ice or animals.

The Dawson City Museum acquired this material from a range of sources including Bertha Sonne, Jesse McCausland and Shirley Moi.

Scope and content

This fonds consists of photographs showing a group of 14 photographs showing Percy de Wolfe's life in the Yukon and mainly concerning his mail run work between Eagle, Alaska and Dawson City, Yukon by dog team. These photographs show Percy de Wolfe with his dog teams and horses along the mail route and his life at his home, covering a time period from when he was a young man up to his later years.
