Biographical history

Poole Field was a prospector, trader and trapper in southeastern Yukon, and NWT. He aided the Geological Survey of Canada and the National Museum on several occasions. He corresponded with a member of the Geological Survey of Canada about the ethnology of the Athabascan-speaking people who lived between the Yukon and Mackenzie Rivers.

Custodial history

Scope and content

The fonds consists of photocopies of four letters typewritten by Poole Field to his friend Jack [?] at the Geological Survey of Canada [or the National Museum] in 1913, from Ross River, Yukon and from the South Nahanni, the summer of 1939. Field describes trips in the Nahanni and Mackenzie River areas, and his travels with "Mountain Indians". He also describes aboriginal beliefs, customs and superstitions. The 1913 letter is from its publication in "Anthropologica", vol. 4 (1957): 47-60.
