In 1942, during the construction of the Alaska Highway, Robert A. Cartter was assigned to the U.S. Army 18th Corps of Engineers. Besides his regular duties Cartter was also the 'unofficial company photographer'. His outfit was responsible for building the section of the road between Whitehorse and the White River.

The fonds includes original prints and slides taken by Cartter in 1942, during the construction of the Alaska Highway. Images are of the road, construction scenes, army crews, vehicles and equipment preparing the road bed and building bridges. There are a number of images of timber and pontoon bridges crossing Edith Creek, the Donjek, Slims and White Rivers, as well as photographs of army tent maintenance camps at Whitehorse, Kluane, etc. The ferry at Takhini River Crossing is also the subject of a few prints. There are images of the Yukon communities of Burwash, Champagne, and Whitehorse and a number of scenic views and panoramas taken in the Slims River, Kluane, Edith Creek and Donjek River Valley area.
