Biographical history

Richard H. Knight was born on June 7, 1877 (d. October 16, 1931). He graduated from University of Toronto's School of Practical Science as a Civil Engineer (1902). Knight was appointed as a Dominion Land Surveyor in 1903 and took up surveying with the Dominion Government. In 1904, Knight became a junior partner with Driscoll & Knight in Edmonton (AB) and was closely connected with the development of the city and western provinces. Due to his extensive knowledge of the west, he was asked to join the Surveyor General's Department in Ottawa (1912) for the Department of the Interior. Knight was assigned to topographical work, which took him to Northern Alberta and into the Peace River district. In 1925 Knight became the president of the Dominion Land Surveyor's Association and then two years later he was appointed to the position of Acting Superintendent of Jasper National Park, while Superintendent Col. S.M. Rogers was away on a leave of absence (1927). Richard Knight died suddenly in Jasper National Park in 1931. Richard Knight married Aida Rachel McKinley in 1905. Aida McKinley was a school teacher at Seaforth, Ontario. The couple spent their honeymoon in New York (NY). Richard and Aida had two daughters, both of their daughters were born in Edmonton: Mabel Gertrude (Knight) Ross (b. April 17, 1907, d. December 26, 2002) and Kathleen Eleanor (Knight) Hare (b. November 10, 1909, d. April 28, 1989)
