Biographical history

Ralph Martin Erwin, 1902-1983, was born in Burwell, Nebraska, USA. In the 1920s he was involved in the western Canadian circuit of Chautauqua. In 1931 he moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba where he opened a chain of restaurants called Salisbury House. In 1979 Erwin sold his company and retired to Toronto, Ontario. The fonds consists of Erwin's correspondence, photographs, and other records related to Chautauqua in western Canada. The photographs document the daily lives of the Chautauqua performers while on tour.
