Biographical history
Richard Deacon was born September 16, 1849, the ninth child of George Deacon and Theresa Flower Deacon of London, England. The family moved to Montreal in 1858. Richard came west in 1870 as a member of General Wolseley's Volunteers to suppress the first Riel Rebellion. He later farmed near Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and built and operated steam tugs on the Saskatchewan River. He was the first certified captain on the Saskatchewan River. On September 16, 1871 he married Mary Morrison McBeath [McBeth], of the Red River Settlement. They had six children: Morrison George, Ann Margaret, Theresa Isabel, Johanna, Alfred Arthur and Richard Albert. Alfred Arthur Deacon was born January 12, 1883 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. He also was a riverboat captain, operating a Hudson's Bay Company steamer along the MacKenzie River to Aklavik.

The fonds consists of photographs of the S.S. MacKenzie River, Fort Smith, Treaty party on Great Slave Lake in 1899, Nahanni Butte, Liard River, Aklavik, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan; The Pas, Manitoba; S.S. Nipawin at Carrot River, and views of unidentified posts. Included are genealogies of the Deacon, McBeath [McBeth], Weatherby, and Masur families.
