Administrative history
Riding In Spite of Disabilities Equestrian Society (RIDES) was incorporated in July 1988 by the mother of a child with cerebral palsy who wanted to bring the recreational, therapeutic and emotional benefits of interacting with horses to people with disabilities.
Horseback riding was recognized by the organization as good emotional therapy as riders developed relationships with the horses they rode, and the warmth and movement of the horses is helpful in loosening, relaxing, and strengthening muscles of people with mobility issues, especially those restricted to a wheelchair. Learning to use the reins gives confidence, and the general movement increases balance.
RIDES operated year-round, with riding occurring every second Saturday except on long week-ends. During winter months, riding occurred in the All Seasons Arena, and summer riding events sometimes occurred on area farms and ranches.
The organization, which survived largely on fundraising and sponsorship, folded in the early 2000s.
