Biographical history
Rolf B. Hougen, (1928- ), is a long-time Whitehorse resident and prominent businessman. His parents emigrated from Norway to Canada and eventually settled in Whitehorse, Yukon in 1944. They opened a 600 square foot store on Wood St. Rolf worked in the store before and after school and took over its management in 1947 at the age of 19. Since then the store has grown into a 75,000 square foot retail outlet, now situated on Main Street and known as the Hougen Centre, selling a variety of products. The Hougen Group has also expanded to include a radio station, a cable TV company, a Ford dealership, real estate, sporting good outlets and more. Rolf is president of Hougen's Ltd. department stores, past chairman of Yukon Research and Development Institute and University of Canada North, a director of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and Finning Tractor & Equipment Co., and chairman of Canadian Satellite Communications Ltd. He is also an avid photographer. In 1955 Rolf married Margaret Van Dyke and they have 6 children and 18 grandchildren.
