Administrative history

The Whitehorse Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church was established in 1944 with the Most Reverend J.L. Coudert appointed as bishop. Following the death of Bishop Coudert in 1965, the Most Reverend J.P. Mulvihill became bishop. The Most Reverend Hubert O'Conner, OMI was then bishop from 1971 to 1986. He was followed by the Most Reverend Thomas Lobsinger, OMI. The diocese comprises the entire Yukon and the northern tip of British Columbia. It has been served by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate since its inception (OMI).Its official name is: Catholic Episcopal Corporation of Whitehorse Inc.

Custodial history

The photographs were copied from negatives made by Helene Dobrowolsky and Rob Ingram for the Alaska Highway Interpretation Mile Posts Side Panel Views of Burwash Landing. The originals had been lent to them by Brother Hobie Sprite of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Whitehorse.

Scope and content

The collection consists of photocopied pages of a scrapbook collection containing articles, newspaper clippings, photographs and maps about the history of the Whitehorse Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church. Particular events recorded were the dedication of the Teslin Church in 1970, and the 25th Anniversary of the work of the Sister of Charity of Providence in 1971. There are photocopied photographs of the missions in Haines Junction, Old Crow, Dawson City, Whitehorse, Carmacks, Burwash and Snag, and copy prints of photographs of parishioners and administrators in front of log churches in the Yukon.
