Biographical history

Roy Seymour Minter was born in London, England in 1916 and moved to Vancouver, BC where he received his education. As a career officer in the Canadian Army his seventeen year span of service involved action in both World War II and the Korean Conflict, as well as a variety of peacetime postings. His last military posting was to the Northwest Highway System Headquarters at Whitehorse in 1955. While in Whitehorse he initiated a number of community activities to establish and promote tourism in Yukon. His 1956 and 1957 presentations to the Yukon Territorial Council in this regard resulted in proposals for Yukon historic sites restoration and the founding of the original Yukon Visitors Association in 1957. Upon his retirement from the military as a Captain in 1957, he joined the White Pass and Yukon Corporation as Special Assistant to the President. After sixteen years with the Corporation, he retired from his position as Corporate Vice President in 1973. He later established his own consulting firm in the field of corporate communications in Vancouver, BC. Roy Minter wrote and lectured extensively about the Yukon and Alaska, and was involved in many development and promotional activities including the 60th Anniversary of the Klondike Gold Rush Jubilee in 1958. He co-founded the Dawson City Gold Rush Festival in 1962, which produced the musical Foxy, later presented on Broadway in New York City. He wrote, directed and produced many industrial films and audio visuals on northern subjects. Two of these films won international awards, notably the documentary "Brave New North" which won the Chicago Film Festival Gold Camera Award, and the film entitled "Take Four Giant Steps" which received the Chris Award at the Columbia Film Festival. Other awards include First Place Canadian Film Award. His comprehensive 1987 book "The White Pass - Gateway to the Klondike", published by McClelland and Stewart, was nominated for the Roderick Haig-Brown Regional Prize and the Hubert Evans Non- Fictional Prize by the judges of the British Columbia 1988 Book Awards. Minter was presented with the Commissioner's Award for service to the Yukon in 1986. In 1988 he received the Yukon Heritage Award. In 1991 he was appointed to the Order of Canada. Minter was active in the recovery of northern archival material, the planning and subsequent developments connected with the Klondike International Park, researching northern history, the creation of three statues documenting historical northern events, the production of a television documentary on the Alaska Highway, and international activities in connection with the 50th Anniversary of the building of the Alaska Highway. Works in progress at the time of his death included a sequel to the White Pass book on the history of the Yukon River. Roy Minter died in Vancouver on February 8, 1996.
