Name of creator
Rutherford Gilbert Caley was born in the United States in 1900. He served in the United States Army in World War I and World War II, serving in the latter as a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army Corps of Engineers on the construction of the Alaska Highway. He married Gertrude English, daughter of Robert and Gertrude English, in 1944, and together they had two children, Timothy and Michael. After World War II Caley worked for the British-American Oil Company in Toronto, Ontario.
Dr. Michael Caley, a son of Rutherford Gilbert Caley, deposited these records in the Provincial Archives in two separate accessions, one each in 1983 and 1984.
Scope and content
Fonds consists of three scrapbooks compiled by Rutherford Gilbert Caley during the time he worked on the construction of the Alaska Highway and includes correspondence, postcards, newspaper clippings, programmes, poems, purchase orders, commemorative stamps, menus, telegrams, and postcards. Fonds also includes photographs depicting Rutherford Gilbert Caley, British American Oil employees, oil sands extraction plants and equipment, First Nations trapping parties and camps, ferries, army vehicles and convoys, soldiers and other army personnel, dogsledding teams, tankers, fires, lakes, camps and storage depots, roads, buses, airplanes, wildlife, ships, aerial views, Hudson's Bay Company posts, automobile accidents, Inuit, and various other people, buildings, equipment and vehicles involved in the construction of the Alaska Highway.
Fonds also includes 3 negatives, 0.01 m of textual records, and 1 map.
