Biographical history

John Ryan, 1740-1815, was a captain in the 27th Regiment of the British Army. His son, Thomas Ryan, 1790-1846, was a lieutenant-colonel in the 50th Regiment. Thomas' nephew, Vincent William Ryan, DD, 1816-1888, was a clergyman of the Anglican Church who became Bishop of Mauritius and later was Assistant Bishop of Ripon. Vincent William's son, Vincent John Ryan, 1849-1925, was also a clergyman and a military chaplain. Vincent John's son, Basil Waud Ryan, 1885-1981, emigrated to Canada in 1911. He served with the Royal Army Service Corps in the First World War, rising to the rank of colonel. In civilian life he was a freight claims agent for the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) from 1913 to 1950, residing in Winnipeg, Manitaba, Calgary, Alberta and Montreal, Quebec.
