S. J. (Stephen) Thompson, 1864-1930, was a professional photographer and publisher at New Westminster and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada from 1885-ca.1900. Thompson photographed along the line of the Canadian Pacific Railway in western Canada.

Fonds consists primarily of views along the Canadian Pacific Railway, Vancouver, B.C. to Canmore, Alberta. Also includes Banff views, including Banff Springs Hotel, Cave and Basin, Bow Valley, Banff townsite and Brett Hospital operating room. Some prints were probably originally included in viewbooks.
