Biographical history
John and Jennie (Grant) Schroder and their children Sterling and Gertrude settled in Walsh about 1901, working in Joe Grant's new store. John was a brother-in law of Joe Grant's and was hired as the butcher for the new store. Sterling worked as a clerk. On John's application for a homestead, SW 14-12-30-3, in 1902, he was described as a pork dealer from Kingston, Ontario. By 1923, there was a shack valued two hundred dollars, two miles of fence at two hundred and fifty dollars, fifty acres of crop land but no livestock.
Sterling had taken a homestead in 1901 on 36-11-30-3 and by 1912 there was a house, stable, chicken coop, shed and granary valued at twelve hundred dollars. The whole family lived there, as it was closer to Walsh.
In June 1914, John drowned in the creek near the brick house on the Sarnia Ranch. Sterling started his own store in Walsh in 1907. He built a home in Walsh for himself and his mother. Sterling married Edna Baker at Christmas 1916.
Jennie was a charter member of the Walsh Women's Institute and lived in Walsh until 1935.
