Biographical history
Sheridan Lawrence, 1870-1952, was born in Stukely, Quebec. He came to Fort Vermilion, Alberta, in 1886 to join his father, H.H. Lawrence, who had preceded him in 1885. They established a farm on the Peace River, 15 km from Fort Vermilion. In 1900 Sheridan married Julia Scott, 1879-1974, who was born in Manitoba and came to Fort Vermilion in 1886 with her family. Her father, Archdeacon Malcolm Scott, started St. Luke's Mission in the settlement. The Lawrences had fifteen children, Alice (Rickard), Hester (Reykdal), Margaret (Flette), Edith (Clarke), Vi (McLeod), Daisy (Flette), Kathleen (Sokoloski), Mrs. G.T. Pattison, Osborne, Malcolm, Stanley, Isaac, Elmer, Walter, and Oswald. Sheridan took over the farm, which was called The Ranche, on which he raised purebred cattle and grew grain. He also traded furs at Hay River and Rat River, NWT. In 1938 Sheridan and Julia retired to the town of Peace River, Alberta. In 1954 the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada designated Sheridan Lawrence as a National Historic Person. Their daughter, Edith, married Clifford Clark and settled at Erskine. She wrote Fort Vermilion Before Alberta / Edith Clark. - Erskine, Alberta : E. Clark, 1982. She also wrote historical articles about the Erskine area.
