Administrative history

The Calgary and District Branch of the South African Veterans Association was formed in Calgary, Alberta in April, 1934 by individuals in the Calgary area who had served in the South African War. Its objectives were to unite all those who served in the war for the purposes of meeting for pleasure and business and to promote the welfare of its members. Various social and commemorative events were held over the next three decades but dwindling membership led to the group's demise in the 1960s.

Custodial history

The fonds was held by Benjamin Ginsberg, long-time executive of the association who gave it to Ted Faber.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of bylaws, minutes, correspondence, financial records and membership rolls (1943-1962). Includes Rev. G. MacGregor's sermon on the treatment of Jews (nd); and some personal papers of Duncan Stuart (1899-1903).
