Gudrun "Goodie" Sparling was born in Whitehorse in 1926. Her father, John Olaf Erikson, came to the Yukon in 1900. She graduated from high school at the Lambert Street School and then studied at the University of British Columbia and Provincial Normal School in Vancouver. Goodie taught school briefly in Carcross and Whitehorse. She lived in Whitehorse until 1948 when she married Joseph T. Sparling in Las Vegas. They lived in Edmonton and raised 4 children: Joseph, Kristina, John, and Karen. Goodie visited Whitehorse every year until 1978 when she returned to live in Whitehorse and manage the Regina Hotel, which had been in the Erickson family since 1925. While living in Whitehorse, Goodie has been involved in numerous local organizations including: the Tourism Industry Association of the Yukon, the Chamber of Commerce, MacBride Museum Society, Transportation Museum, the Yukon Order Of Pioneers, Fireweed Lions Club, Anglican Church Women, the Yukon Historical and Museums Association and the Vancouver Yukoners Association.
