Fonds glen-2291 - Spencer and Esme Tuck fonds

Spencer Henwood Tuck, 1879-1951, was born in Hampshire, England, and grew up in Tenby, Wales. He came to Canada ca. 1900 and worked on Vancouver Island for several years. From 1904 to 1907 he prospected on the Adam River in British Columbia. In 1911 he took up a homestead near Pouce Coupe, British Columbia. During the First World War he served overseas with the 49th Edmonton Regiment. He married Esme Gardiner in 1919 in England, and on their return to Canada they settled on the Pouce Coupe homestead. Esme, 1887-1974, was born in England and raised in South Africa, the daughter of an English soldier. She was serving in the Women's Legion in England when she met her husband. She was an avid gardener, and was one of the first to grow flowers in the Peace River district. The Tucks moved into Pouce Coupe in the early 1940s, and Spencer worked for the forestry division. Esme wrote A Brief History of Pouce Coupe Village and District, on behalf of the local Women's Institute, in 1954.
