Biographical history
The Springer family, Gotthold, Gotthold Junior, Antoinette and Justine, were the proprietors of "The Springer Hotel" in Edmonton, ALberta. Antoinette and Gotthold Springer began their business in 1911 with "Springer's Home Apartments", a bedsit residence, located on 105 Street just north of Jasper Avenue. The residence was well known and frequented by the majority of theatrical artists who came to town for one week engagements at the Strand Theatre, which was known then as the Pantages Theatre. The Springer's residence was admired for its comfort, hospitality and excellent cuisine. The name of the establishment was changed to "Springer House" sometime between 1919 and 1923. In 1925 the name changed again to "The Springer Hotel" which it was known as until it closed in 1944.
Custodial history
Dr. G. R. A. Rice originally donated this material to Olive Finland and Jack Hudson of the Citadel Theatre in 1975. Dr. Rice was the husband of Justine Rice, nee Springer. It was Justine Springer who carefully preserved the photographs and other theatrical material from her time spent as a child in "The Springer Hotel". The records were transfered to the Provincial Archive of Alberta in April of 1976 after having been used in a display at the Citadel Theatre.
Scope and content
Consists of a large collection of black and white photographs, as well as theatre programmes, news clippings, guest books and other memorabilia of the entertainers who performed in Edmonton between 1911 and 1924 and stayed at the Springer's hotel. The majority of the material is publicity material either for the Pantages Theatre or the individual artists themselves.
