Administrative history

The St. Andrew Society was established in Calgary, Alberta in 1884 and incorporated in 1923. It was formed as a benevolent society whose main purpose was to assist natives of Scotland and their descendants in times of distress. During the same time period there also existed another society, the Caledonian Society, which performed largely the same function. Both societies merged in 1953 to create the St. Andrew Caledonian Society of Calgary. The society served as a social centre; cultivating and promoting Scottish culture including music, dance, language, literature and sports. The society was open to all of Scottish birth, descent or marriage in the city of Calgary and district. The society was involved in various Scottish programs over the years, including Burns nights, White Heather concerts and others.
