Biographical history

Stephen Mandel was born in Windsor, Ontario in 1946. He received an Associate of Arts degree, a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, and a Master of Political Science from the University of Windsor. He moved to Edmonton, Alberta in the early 1970s with his wife Lynne. In Edmonton they adopted their children Rachel and Adam. He opened his own business, Mandel Group, and was involved with business development, residential and commercial real estate development, construction, and the operation of hotels and sports enterprises. He was also an active volunteer for the Alberta Heart Institute, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Allen Gray Continuing Care, Jewish Community Centre, YMCA Enterprise Center, the United Jewish Appeal and the Jewish Federation of Edmonton. After a failed attempt for election as a School Trustee, Mandel was elected to Edmonton City Council in 2001 as a Councillor for Ward 1 and was elected Mayor of Edmonton on October 18, 2004, and re-elected to a second term in 2007. Lynne Mandel, also a native of Windsor, Ontario, trained as a professional dancer in Toronto, and served on the boards of many charitable organizations in Edmonton, including the Alberta Ballet and the Support Network. Dr. Rachel Mandel Ganon graduated as an Optometrist in 2007, and married Alex Ganon in August, 2007.

Collection consists of records pertaining to Stephen Mandel, from 2002-2006, mainly concerning his political career, and includes photocopied newspaper clippings, election materials, posters and correspondence. Fonds also includes photographs depicting Stephen and Lynne Mandel, and a wedding invitation for their daughter, Rachel.
