Born and educated in Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, John Stokoe, 1882-1928, emigrated to Canada in 1903. He moved out west in the same year, first settling in Manitoba before taking up a homestead near Wilhelmina (now called Altario), Alberta in 1909. In 1913 he married Maissie Mason, 1882-1957.
