Biographical history
Stuart W. Bates grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He served in the Canadian Navy from 1944 to 1945. In 1947, he joined the RCMP. He served in the RCMP in Whitehorse from 1949 to 1950, in Minto from 1950 to 1954 and in Carmacks from 1954 to 1956. Stuart married Cordelia Ann M. Bates in January 1952 in Winnipeg. They had one son, Wesley W. Bates in 1952, and one daughter, Christine S. Abbey in 1954. In 1965, the family left the Yukon for Kamloops, B.C., where Stuart worked with the B.C. Forest Service until 1986. He was living in Kamloops in 1996.
Custodial history
Stu Bates sent these items to Pat and Geraldine Van Bibber whom Stu and his wife had met at the Van Bibber's campground in Minto in 1988. Geraldine Van Bibber lent the material to Yukon Archives for copying in 1989.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of copies of a typewritten history of Minto, written by Stu Bates in 1988, and copies of photographs of Minto townsite, residents, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) detachment, 1951, and moving the detachment buildings to Carmacks, Yukon in 1954.
