Biographical history
Mary Caroline (Tannie) Spencer was born January 13, 1892 in Fort McMurray, North West Territories. She was the daughter of James Stewart and Lilly (Elmore) Spencer. The family arrived in the Lac La Biche area of the North West Territories in 1900, when James assumed the position of factor at the Lac La Biche Hudson's Bay Company post. In 1908, Lilly and the children moved to Big Bay (Barnegat), Alberta. Tannie's brothers included Arthur (died young), Charlie (died 1918), Marvin, George, and Elmer. Tannie married in 1920 and had six children: Stewart, Charles, Marvin, Alphonse Irwin, Angus and Alvina. After spending most of her life in Lac La Biche, Tannie died on May 21, 1991.

Tom Maccagno, Mayor of Lac La Biche, allowed the records to be copied by the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1992. Mary Caroline Deschambeau had given the original negatives to M. Maccagno for the local archives. The originals were returned to Tom Maccagno.
