Biographical history

James Edward "Ted" Bower, 1933- , was born and educated in Red Deer, Alberta. He later graduated from the University of Alberta and became a journalist. In 1956 he married Dorothy Bickell and they had four sons. Ted was the editor of the Red Deer Advocate newspaper from 1970 to 1979. He then moved to Calgary where he became a public relations manager for a large company. He is retired and resides in Calgary.

Custodial history

The records came into the custody of Ted Bower while he was editor of the Red Deer Advocate. He preserved the records during a purge of old editorial files and photographs by the newspaper.

Scope and content

The collection consists of the speeches and correspondence of Francis Philip Galbraith, the owner-publisher of the Red Deer Advocate (1937-1957), editorial department history files (1967-1978) and photographs (1911-1970). Includes Francis Philip Galbraith's correspondence file on the legal challenges to the 1937 Alberta Press Act and subsequent Pulitzer Prize award.
