Biographical history
Nello Vernon-Wood, 1882-1978, was born in Stratford-upon-Avon. He came to Canada in 1903, first to Ontario, then in 1904 to Medicine Hat, Alberta. In about 1906 or 1907 he moved to Banff where he worked as a guide for Jim Brewster. He was soon nicknamed "Tex". He subsequently worked as an outfitter, horse wrangler, hunting guide and park warden. In 1919 he acquired his own pack outfit, which operated in the Lake Louise area. In 1938, with more hunting grounds off limits due to the expanding mountain parks, he moved to the Columbia Valley of British Columbia where he ran a ranch and boys camp. He was also a writer and was well known for his stories which were published in American hunting and fishing magazines. For further information see Mountain Masculinity : The Life and Writing of Nello "Tex" Vernon-Wood in the Canadian Rockies, 1906-1938 / edited and introduced by Andrew Gow and Julie Rack. -- Edmonton : Athabasca University Press, 2008.
