Administrative history

In 1968 the Francophone theatre groups Le Rideau Rouge and Des Collégiens united under the name Théâtre français d'Edmonton (T.F.E.) through the efforts of France Levasseur, Réginald Bigras, Claude Ouimet and Jean Fortier. The T.F.E. functioned without an organizational structure until October 1969, when it established a board of directors with Hélène Narayana as its first president. In 1970 Julien Forcier was hired as its first professional artistic director. The semiprofessional theatre company was run by members of Edmonton's Francophone community. Its objective was to promote and develop the French culture and language in Edmonton and throughout Alberta through theatre. The Théâtre français d'Edmonton was incorporated under the Societies Act on May 14, 1979. The T.F.E. presented shows at the Faculté Saint-Jean and in 1981 it held Alberta's first Francophone theatre festival. T.F.E. also participated in tours and festivals in Canada, France, Luxembourg and Germany. In 1992 the Théâtre français d'Edmonton amalgamated with Boîte à Popicos to form L'UniThéâtre.
