Biographical history

Theodora (Dora) Shwaga was born in 1933 in the Ferguson District east of Athabasca, the fifth of six children born to John and Zofia Staszewski who had emigrated from Poland in 1929. She attended the one-room Ferguson School from 1940 to 1946 completing all 8 grades. In the fall of 1946 Dora began Grade 9 in Athabasca and stayed in St. Mary's Anglican Hostel for 3 years and at Holy Rosary Academy for 1 year. After graduation she attended the University of Alberta, became a teacher and taught at Rochester East, Mercury and Lahaieville Schools. In 1954 she married Steve Shwaga and they had a family of 7: Susann, David, Carolyn, Glen, Gerald, Neil and Wendy. Dora taught school at Calling Lake from 1960-1990.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of a brief history of Calling Lake School prepared for the official opening of the new Calling Lake School Complex, Oct., 1989; the book: By a Lake of Sparkling Blue, a history of Calling Lake School No. 4124 in 1997; the book: Memories of Ferguson School No. 4573 in 2002; 219 photographs used in the Ferguson School book. All 3 items were written by Dora Shwaga.
