Biographical history

Thomas Anson Gaetz (1871-1950), son of Joseph Gaetz and Sarah Beaumont, was born and educated in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. In 1887 he headed to Red Deer, Alberta, on the advice of his brother, James Beaumont Gaetz, who had already moved to the region. He homesteaded in the Penhold district until moving into Red Deer in 1896. In the same year, he married Emily Parry (1870-1953). They had 5 children: Joseph Beaumont (1897-1968), Thomas Harold (1899-?), Raymond Percy (1904-1908), Florence Stone (1906-1984), and Richard Anson (1908-1924). Thomas Anson Gaetz was a long time merchant in Red Deer. He served as a town councillor; was president of the Red Deer Board of Trade and the Red Deer Exhibition Society; and was a sports enthusiast. James Beaumont "Beau" Gaetz (1867-1922), a brother of Thomas Anson Gaetz, came to the Red Deer area in 1886 and homesteaded in the Waskasoo district. In 1898 he headed off to the Klondike, but had to return unsuccessfully in 1902. Upon his return, he became a partner with his brother Hector in a ranch near Alix, Alberta. In 1914-1915 he worked as a trail blazer for Fred Brewster in the Banff, Jasper and Hinton regions. He never married and died following an accident in 1922.
