History

Sy Lister founded Lister Furs Ltd. in Winnipeg in 1942. He was one of Western Canada's few fur garment manufacturers skilled in all aspects of the trade, from appraising and buying raw furs to manufacturing and retailing. He moved his wife Ida and family to Edmonton in 1953. He opened his business in the basement of the MacDonald Hotel, and eventually to "Furrier's Row" on Jasper Ave. in 1963, and it grew to be the largest fur store in Alberta. Children Phil and Cindie eventually took over the business when Sy became ill in 1983. The store moved to Eaton Centre in 1995. Phil is a lawyer, married to Debra. Their daughter Melanie lives in Jerusalem with her husband Zalman Weiss. They have two children: Shimon Shmuel and Nathan Noah. His daughter Debbie, married Jason Hatch. Cindie is a former French teacher, and volunteer ESL teacher, and is married to Lorne Thompson. They have two children: Tamara and David. Sy Lister died in December, 1989.
