Biographical history

Thomas "Tom" Allen Crawford was born October 25, 1910. He married Alma M. Smith of Lincoln, Kansas on January 1, 1939. They had three children: Judith b. 1942, James b. 1947, and Joan b. 1949. Tom was stationed in Skagway, and other locations in Alaska, from 1943-1945. He was a barber by profession and during the war he barbered at the PX (Post Exchange).

Scope and content

The fonds consists of original photographs taken by Tom Crawford while he was stationed in Alaska and the Yukon during World War II. The majority of photographs were taken in Skagway and Whitehorse. Skagway scenes include mountain views, streets and buildings, and the docks. Whitehorse scenes include views of buildings downtown, the White Pass and Yukon Route (WP&YR) trains and depot, a First Nations graveyard, the Old Log Church, Northwest Service Command headquarters, Standard Oil Refinery, Miles Canyon, the airport, and Alaska Highway construction camp 232 north of town.
