Biographical history

On June 21, 1899, the eighth treaty between Indians of North America and the Queen of England was signed. Treaty No. 8, encompassing a land mass of approximately 840, 000 kilometers, is home to 39 First Nation communities covering the areas of Northern Alberta, Northwestern Saskatchewan, Northeastern British Columbia, and the Southwest portion of the Northwest Territories. The Treaty 8 tribal Association is comprised of 6 native tribes in northeastern British Columbia near the community of Fort St. John. The member bands of the Treaty 8 Tribal Association are: Blueberry River First Nation, Doig River First Nation, Halfway River First Nation, Prophet River Band, Salteau First Nation, and West Moberly First Nations. The Treaty 8 Tribal Association has an office in Fort St. John and negotiates with various levels of government on behalf of its member First Nations.

Custodial history

Donated by Mrs. G. A. Cooke of the Boreal Institute Library of the University of Alberta. It is unclear how Mrs. Cooke acquired the records.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of materials created by the Treaty 8 Tribal Association. The fonds consists of this series: Fort St. John, B.C. community and district [1973-1974]. The series consists of 21 videotapes chronicling tribal activities and educational programs and interviews.
