Administrative history

Jim Tustian was a freelance commercial filmmaker in Edmonton, Alberta. Born in Pincher Creek Alberta in 1939, James (Jim) Bradford Tustian worked for CJLH-TV in Lethbridge, CHCN-TV in Calgary and CFRN-TV in Edmonton. In 1966, he established his own company, James B. Tustian and Associates. Over the years, the name of company changed to J. Tustian Productions and then to Tustian Film Productions. This company created television commercials, documentaries and industrial films. For these, the company might provide cinematography, editing and sound recording. Tustian Film Productions engaged in work for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), ACCESS, CFRN-TV, CFAC Calgary, Century II Studios Limited as well as many corporate clients. Jim won Alberta Motion Picture Industries Association (AMPIA) award for best television commercial for Beau Jangles (1975) and Morning Men (1979).

The fonds consists of complete and incomplete films, along with film elements, regarding a variety of promotional, documentary and educational films created by Tustian Film Productions. The fonds also includes textual records, specifically production files and information about and photographs of Jim Tustian.

Includes 0.30 m of textual records, 8 audio reels, 7 photographs, and 7 negatives.

Immediate source of acquisition

Jim Tustian deposited the records in the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1988 and 1993. The material that comprises PR2010.0476 was likely donated between 1989-1995, but the exact circumstances of the donation are unknown.
