História biográfica

Ambrose Upton Gledstanes Bury was born August 1, 1869 at Downing House, County Kildare, Ireland, to Charles Michael and Margaret (Aylmer) Bury. Ambrose graduated from Trinity College, Dublin in 1890 with a Bachelor of Arts and in 1893 with a Master of Arts. In 1906, he was called to the Irish bar as a member of King's Inns, Dublin. Ambrose married Margaret Amy Beatrice Owen on June 16, 1897; they had one son, William Gledstanes. In 1912, the Bury family arrived in Edmonton, Alberta. Ambrose was admitted to the Alberta bar in February 1913, and became a partner in the firm Dickie, Wilson and Bury. During the First World War, Ambrose went into practice with E.B. Cogswell, and in 1916 became a partner in the firm Ewing, Harvie and Bury. In 1932, Mr. Ewing left the practice to become a member of the Supreme Court of Alberta, and the firm became Harvie, Bury and Yanda. Beginning in 1919, Ambrose was chancellor of Anglican Diocese of Athabasca. Ambrose ran in the 1921 provincial election as a conservative but was defeated. From 1922 to 1925, Ambrose was a city alderman, and he was mayor of Edmonton from 1927 to 1929. He ran in a federal by-election in 1925 for the East Edmonton constituency and was elected, only to be defeated in the 1926 general election. He was elected again in the 1930 election, but was defeated in the 1935 general election. In 1935, Ambrose returned to private practice, and was appointed a judge for the district court of northern Alberta, retiring from this post in 1944. Following his wife's death on February 6, 1946, Ambrose relocated to Preston, England to live with his brother; he later moved to Cork, Ireland. In January 1950, Ambrose returned to Canada, to Ottawa, Ontario to be near his widowed daughter-in-law. Judge A.U.G. Bury died March 29, 1951 in Ottawa.
