Administrative history
Edmonton South Presbytery was established in 1966 and consisted of pastoral charges located in South Edmonton and beyond in the bounds of the original Edmonton Presbytery (1925-1966). Edmonton South Presbytery functioned until 1972 when it was dissolved by Alberta Conference, along with Edmonton North Presbytery and Edmonton Centre Presbytery. In their place was created a metropolitan presbytery for pastoral charges in the City of Edmonton, called Edmonton Presbytery (1972-); and a non-metropolitan presbytery in the surrounding Edmonton area, known as Yellowhead Presbytery. Changes over time to the pastoral charges are documented in the year books published by The United Church of Canada. The court of presbytery included ordained and lay members, as well as any corresponding members as prescribed in The Manual of The United Church of Canada. The officers included a chairperson, secretary, treasurer, and various standing committees. As with all United Church presbyteries, Edmonton South Presbytery was responsible for: the oversight of pastoral charges and the promotion of religious life within its bound; receiving and transmitting petitions and appeals; dealing with matters sent down by a higher court, the constitution of an executive to continue the work of the presbytery between meetings; the election of lay members to the Conference; the submission of an annual report and minutes to the Conference; any special appointments; the receipt of reports from lay organizations; assessments from pastoral charges for providing for the work of presbytery; requests involving real property within its bounds; amalgamations, closures, re-alignments of pastoral charges and congregations; receiving petitions involving incorporation; appointment of Ministry personnel and candidates for ministry; oversight of the pastoral relationship and of ministry personnel on its roll; and the review of pastoral charge and congregation records.

Custodial history
These records were acquired sometime prior to 1975; however, there is no surviving record as to exactly how, when or from whom the Conference Archives came to possess the records. In 1975, the Conference entered into a permanent loan agreement with The Provincial Archives of Alberta (PAA) for the physical custody and control of the holdings of the Conference Archives and the records were relocated to the PAA in that same year. The records currently reside at the PAA.
