The Associate Vice-President (Student Affairs), who reports to the Vice-President (Academic), is the Chief Academic Officer for Student Affairs and is responsible for providing effective counselling and health services on campus; programs and services designed to meet the social, personal, and, in consultation with the University Chaplains, the spiritual needs of students; appropriate tutoring and support services for Native Students; and, in consultation with the General Faculties Council Student Awards Committee, student awards and financial assistance. The Associate VP(Student Affairs) is a member of Senate. Responsibility for student affairs after the University gained autonomy was held by the Assistant to the President, Student Affairs (renamed Chief Academic Officer, Student Affairs in 1968) and the Council on Student Affairs (discontinued in 1969). The Student Affairs Office included Student Health Services, Student Counselling Services, Student Awards, High School Relations, and university residences. In late 1969, a reorganization took place and a Director, Student Affairs was appointed to report to the Chief Academic Officer, Student Affairs and oversee the Student Affairs Office. Another reorganization occurred in 1973 when the Student Affairs Office was renamed the Division of Student Personnel Services and the Director, Student Affairs was renamed Director of Student Personnel Services. The Director no longer reported to the the Chief Academic Officer, Student Affairs but to the President. The Chief Academic Officer, Student Affairs continued to exist but the functions retained by this position are unclear. In 1974, the position of Chief Academic Officer, Student Affairs was renamed Associate Vice-President (Academic) and Chief Academic Officer, Student Affairs and the reporting relationship was transferred from the President to the Vice-President (Academic). In 1981, the position of Director of Student Personnel Services was discontinued and the responsibility for general administration of student services was transferred to the Associate VP (Academic) and Chief Academic Officer, Student Affairs -- apparently to bring all matters related to student affairs and services under one position. The units reporting to the Associate VP(Academic) and Chief Academic Officer, Student Affairs after this reorganization were: Student Awards and Financial Aid, Student Programs and Services, Student Counselling, and University Health Services. Other responsibilities were the Library and Communications Media, as well as assisting the Vice-President (Academic) in curriculum development and international education, however, by 1982 the Director of Libraries and Director of Communications Media reported to the VP(Academic). By 1982, the Associate VP(Academic) and Chief Academic Officer for Student Affairs was also responsible for international educational activities through the Centre for International Education and Business, and was the Director, International Relations. In 1988 or 1989, the position of Associate VP(Academic) and Chief Academic Officer, Student Affairs was split into two positions reporting to the VP(Academic) and Provost: Associate Vice-President (Student Affairs) with responsibility for matters related to student affairs, and the Associate Vice-President (Academic) and Provost-Elect overseeing international education activities and international relations. The current incumbent as Associate Vice-President (Student Affairs) is Dr. M.A. (Peggy) Patterson (August 1995-). The incumbents as Associate Vice-President (Academic) have been Don Detomasi (1989-1994); Howard Yeager (1994-December 1997); Interim AVP (A) Brian Gaines (January-September 1998); Jim Frideres (September 1998-2003); and Robert E. Woodrow (2003-).
