The Deans' Council of the University of Lethbridge was established in 1967. It was mandated by the Universities Act of Alberta. Initially, it consisted of the President, Vice-President, deans, and other officers of the University, and functioned as an informal advisory body for the President. In 1968 the Executive Committee of the Deans' Council became an influential body in itself. In January 1969 the Deans' Council was disbanded, and the Executive Committee was transformed into a new Deans' Council. By the 1980s, the Deans' Council continued to function primarily as the President's advisory body, but its membership and purpose were more formally defined.
